Bringing the Huey to MSFS: The Development of Our UH-1H Add-On

At Taog’s Hangar, we strive to create helicopter add-ons that provide Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) users with an experience as close as possible to flying the real aircraft. Our UH-1H Huey was one of our most ambitious projects, and its development was shaped by extensive research, real-world references, and collaboration with experienced Huey pilots.

Research and Real-World References

From the very beginning, accuracy was our top priority. We started by gathering as much information as possible from official flight manuals, maintenance documents, and technical resources related to the UH-1H. Every system, gauge, and cockpit function was carefully studied to ensure we could replicate the aircraft's functionality in MSFS with a high level of fidelity.

Beyond manuals and documents, we wanted first-hand experience with the aircraft. That’s why we visited the Aviation Museum in Berlin, where we had direct access to a real UH1D Huey. This allowed us to take high-resolution photos, measure components, and gather detailed reference material to ensure that our 3D model was as accurate as possible.

Pilot Collaboration and Flight Model Refinement

Having access to a real Huey was one thing, but we also wanted to ensure the aircraft felt right in the sim. To achieve this, we collaborated with real-life Huey pilots, who provided insights into the helicopter’s flight characteristics, handling behavior, and operational nuances. Their input was invaluable in fine-tuning our flight model, helping us refine everything from engine performance to the collective and cyclic response.

We paid special attention to how the helicopter behaves in various flight conditions, from hovering and autorotations to high-speed maneuvers. The goal was to replicate the distinctive feel of the UH-1H, making sure users could experience the same responsiveness and weight balance as in the real aircraft.

Authentic Sound Design

One of the most defining characteristics of the Huey is its unmistakable "whop-whop" rotor sound, a feature we knew had to be captured correctly. To make this happen, we worked with individuals who had direct access to a real Huey, allowing them to record engine noise, rotor wash, cockpit switches, and even door sounds. These recordings formed the foundation of our custom sound package, designed to give MSFS users an immersive audio experience.

The result is a soundscape that not only captures the essence of the Huey but also reacts dynamically to flight conditions, whether you’re idling on the ground or pushing the aircraft to its limits.

Bringing the Huey to MSFS

After months of research, testing, and refinements, we released the UH-1H Huey in June 2024. It includes three variants—Military, Civilian, and High Skids—along with over 30 customizable attachments and a wide selection of 40 liveries.

Our goal was to bring an aircraft that not only looks the part but also feels and sounds as close to reality as possible. Thanks to the support of pilots, engineers, and MSFS enthusiasts, we believe we have created a Huey experience that does justice to this legendary helicopter.

We’re grateful to the MSFS community for their continued feedback and support, and we look forward to bringing even more high-quality helicopter add-ons to the platform in the future!
